Last Harbor Guide
Last Harbor fishing guide
How to fish in Last Harbor — species, bait, water conditions, the best fishing spots and how fishing fills the food stat without risking the shore.
Fishing in Last Harbor is the quietest food source in the game. It makes almost no noise, it can be done from the deck of your boat, and it fills the hunger stat without the risk of a scavenging run. This guide covers the species we expect, the bait you will need, and the best fishing spots in the San Juan Islands.
Why fishing matters
Fishing is the only food source that does not require you to leave your boat. On a PvP server, that is the difference between eating and being ambushed. Fishing also produces raw materials for cooking and crafting — fish oil, fish bones, and rare species that are used in high-tier recipes.
Species
We expect at least six fish species in Last Harbor, based on the San Juan Islands setting: salmon, cod, halibut, herring, rockfish and a rare deep-water species. Each has a different rarity, a different bait and a different stat profile. The rare deep-water species is used in a high-tier cooking recipe we expect to be the best food in the game.
Bait
Bait is the limiting reagent for fishing. You can craft basic bait from cloth and plant fiber. Better bait (which catches rarer fish) requires insects, worms and small creatures you can find in forested islands. The premium bait is a crafted lure, which guarantees a catch but uses a non-replenishable component.
Best fishing spots
The best fishing spots are kelp beds (lots of fish, slow current) and the lee side of large islands (sheltered water, lots of bait). The worst fishing spot is open water in a storm — too rough, no fish, and you will take exposure damage.
Fishing mechanics
Cast, wait, hook, reel. The minigame is a timing-based one: when the float dips, click to hook, then hold to reel. The reel phase has a stamina cost, and breaking the line on a heavy fish costs bait. The premium rod (T2) has a higher catch rate and a longer cast distance.
Quick checklist
- Carry 2 fishing rods on the boat
- Always have 20+ basic bait in storage
- Fish in kelp beds and lee sides, not open water
- Cooked fish > dried fish > raw fish for stat gain
- Save the rare deep-water species for the high-tier recipe
